Ok, she’s been on my radar since around 2014, but is Marie Marot on yours? She should be!
This shirt designer is her own best brand ambassador (wait, why isn’t she on Substack?!). Her personal taste is textbook gentlewoman style; in fact, I’m pretty sure she was on my Pinterest board for my book pitch. Think tailored crop pants, Jil Sander or Church’s lace-ups, Charvet socks and – of course – the most beautiful cotton shirts, worn buttoned or unbuttoned. I can even forgive the mules…
Marie Marot may not be a household name, but she has the ‘right’ endorsers – most recently Kamala Harris, whose sky blue Patti pocket shirt elevates her presidential chic considerably thanks to her stylist Leslie Fremar.
In a 2015 feature in The Coveteur Marot revealed, “[My style icons are] Gabrielle Chanel, Carole Bouquet, Francoise Sagan, Andrée Putman, Joseph Beuys, Claude Monet and Charlotte Rampling.” Of course they are! And her beauty choices were equally exacting. “[My routine is] very simple and minimalist but [I’m] very faithful. I use Shu Uemura cleansing oil, Estée Lauder moisturizer, Yves Saint Laurent Touch Eclat, Shiseido powder, Guerlain terracotta bronzer and MAC or Shu Uemura lipstick. I’m always wearing fragrance. Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene, Eau de Gentiane Blanche by Hermès or Bois de Sycomore by Mad et Len.” You know what? I immediately unearthed my Hermès Eau de Gentiane Blanche* and re-fell in love with its earthy citrus-meets-musk scent.
To sum up her sartorial aesthetic, she articulated herself perfectly in this 2016 Guardian article (which coincidentally also championed my book); “The mistake people make is to think of [androgyny] as an imitation of masculinity. It’s precisely the opposite: it is about redefining a sense of elegance and seduction that you are in control of.” Love!
