The Ordinary Milky Toner Key Ingredients

Saccharomyces Ferment – yeast fermennt

N-Acetyl Glucosamine – prevents dead skin cells sticking to the skin

Squalane – for short and long term hydration and support skin barrier

What is N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG)?

NAG is a fermentation derived technology with an acid-mimicking formula. It encourages surface exfoliation to smooth out texture and deliver radiance to the skin.

In The Ordinary Milky Toner, the 3%N-Acetyl Glucosamine undergoes an additional fermentation process using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (the common yeast strain used in fermentation).

AHAs vs NAG for Exfoliation

Exfoliation agents generally work by targeting the adhesives that hold the dead skin cells together.

AHAs work to break down these adhesion structures, whereas NAG actually prevents them from sticking to the dead skin cells to start with, which allows easier exfoliation.

My Review of The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner

The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner – glass bottle

I was really excited to try The Ordinary Milky Toner, because I love gentle exfoliation and I am always keen to add in an extra hydrating step.

One of the things I worry about in skincare is over-exfoliation because I think it is so easy to sensitise the skin which often means you end up achieving the opposite of what you set out to do. And with so many AHAs at differing levels across a whole host of different products, it’s a very easy mistake to make.

Therefore, a product like this Milky Toner is such a safe bet when it comes to achieving smoother, more radiant skin because it doesn’t employ the classic acids that most exfoliators do.

I absolutely love the milky, hydrating texture of The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner. It is super lightweight and despite its milky appearance, it feels very water-like. It sinks into the skin really nicely, and feels like an ultra light moisturiser that gives skin an instant glow.

It is very comfortable and soothing, fine enough in texture to sit under serum and then moisturiser, and I think you could layer pretty much anything on top.

How to use The Ordinary Milky Toner

This non-acid exfoliating toner has been designed to be used after cleansing and before a serum. You can apply it using a cotton pad, or straight on to the skin with fingers. I like to press it in with my finger tips.

You don’t need to rinse and it is suitable for twice daily use.
